Sailing Palawan, Day 1

It all started with an article in the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/travel/an-aimless-sailing-trip-off-palawan-in-the-philippines.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0) about sailing around the islands in the Philippines. It wasn't long before we were inquiring with Tao Philippines about booking a trip for ourselves. We sort of cheaped out and selected the jungle and island tour. This tour is actually operated by a fellow named Gener under his Palawan Sailing outfit.
We arranged for a 4d/3n tour down the Babuyan River to Honda Bay. It started with a trek through the jungle and then a lazy float down the river to a farm house. The next day was down the river to the sea where we sailed out to an island that we essentially had to ourselves. We opted for a second night out on the islands and it was a great choice.
This section of photos is from the first day, and a bit. Part of the tour advertises that you stay with a local family. We stayed with a 78-yr-old man Ador, and his eldest son (his wife was away in town visiting the clinic). Ador grows coffee, so naturally upon our arrival we were greeted with a cup of coffee. A few cups of that during the evening and it's perhaps no surprise that we didn't fall asleep easily. But we attribute the rest of the night's poor sleep to the dog who snuck into our cabana and proceeded to chase his fleas all night.

  • Our drop-off point to start our trip, seemingly in the middle of nowhere down a muddy road. I believe we are somewhere near the Underground River. (Albino caribao pulling a man on a bamboo skid.)

  • Not exactly the greatest vehicle for getting around, but this ox cart is cheap to build and it will go over ANY type of terrain.

  • From the road we walked through a family's yard and straight up into the jungle. It had rained so it was a muddy, slippery trail, which nicely added to the intense humidity. Julie nearly lost a shoe crossing this puddle.

  • After 2hours we emerge at the river. The walking stick was a good addition.

  • Our bamboo raft awaits

  • We take the raft, while a boatboy hauls the gear in a motor boat. The hill poking up in the background is where the famed Underground River is, that we didn't go to.

  • It takes two to guide the raft; one in front, one back. Using poles to push us along, Venice-style.

  • Great stuff! Seemingly miles away from anything, we are exploring the countryside of the Philippines.

  • Recall our bamboo raft in Thailand, it didn't really float either. But this one has a bench, and some fresh sprouts.

  • Our first of many wonderfully tasty meals prepared by Gener and his crew. Here some large tuna steaks are being grilled with some banana leaves as a wind break.

  • These are wild ferns that our guide Gener happily gathered from the river's edge. They're quite tasty, and apparently very good for you too. A plate of native calamansi limes is being prepared to create a wonderful salsa dish.

  • An orphaned wild boar was found, and caught, and will eventually become a good pet, and an excellent guard "dog" we're told.

  • Is it ironic that we're staying at a farm and Andrew's got a farmer tan already? One of the chickens running around turned into our dinner.

  • This "little" guy's croak was incredibly loud. Makes sense, he's the largest gecko I've ever seen!

  • Breakfast on the veranda, after what was to be the worst night's sleep of the entire trip. The jungle is NOT quiet at night! First it was the dog thumping its tail. Then an insect (bird?) wailed like a British police siren. And finally the roosters started up.

  • No running water in this place. But the stream is running, so place a bamboo pipe into it and there's your shower! And drinking water barrel.

  • Since we were at a farm, Andrew felt compelled to ask the old man what he grew. So we got a tour of his plantation across the river.

  • Julie shows off coffee beans, some of which are ready to be picked. The old man lamented that he's too tired to pick them all - do we want to take over?

  • But he's not too tired to climb a tree and knock down a few pomelos for us! It was rather strange, he went and got a long bamboo pole, which I thought he'd use to knock them down while standing on the ground. But no, he climbed up in the tree and poked the fruit down from up there. Andrew quickly caught them before they landed in the cow pies.

  • The boys load up our boat to leave. Our little cabana hut is on the left. The old man lives here with his wife and one of his sons.
